AN INTRODUCTION TO THIS PHOTO WORKSHOP
Colombia is a place that every bird watcher or photographer dreams about. It is after all the country with more birds than ANY other with a whopping 1900+ species! This is a place that every bird photographer should not leave on their bucket list. I have designed this trip to visit a few of the really special bird hotspots in the mountains of Colombia. From Mountain Tanagers to Antpittas to Cock of the Rocks and hummingbirds this trip has some fantastic and unique photo opportunities!
PHOTO ITINERARY
On this trip we will focus on some of the really unique, exciting and entirely safe birding destinations
between the beautiful city of Medellin and the city of Cali. To
start the tour participants will be met at the Medellin airport and transferred to our meeting hotel in Medellin.
We'll get the trip started off with a serious splash of colour in the
gorgeous town of Jardin. Here we will focus our efforts on the incredibly active Cock of the Rock lek as well as the endangered Yellow-eared Parrots. Other great birds in the area could include Black-billed Mountain Toucans and Lacrimose Mountain Tanagers.
Our second lodge of the trip is a very cozy one where we can try for some more hummingbirds and tanagers around the feeders at the lodge. We can also try for a morning excursion to search for beautiful birds like the Purplish-mantled Tanager,
Black and Gold Tanager as well as a nice set of hummingbird feeders with
around 10 species .
At our third
area we will focus on a variety of new birding sites around the city of
Manizales. Over the past few years there have been some new and exciting
opportunities around here for birds like the Crescent-faced Antpitta,
Grey-breasted Mountain Toucan, Antpitta feeding stations, as well as
hummingbirds and Tanagers. It will be an action packed few days!
After 3 days
around Manizales we will drive just a short (1 hr) way up the road to a
beautiful highland retreat. We will be staying at a gorgeous hot springs
hotel where we can soak in the thermal pools after a long day out chasing
birds around. This area has more Mountain Tanagers than I have ever seen!
Scarlet-bellied, Buff-breasted, and Hooded are all very possible as is the
gorgeous Golden-crowned Tanager. In addition several species of hummingbirds
come in to the feeders at the lodge. From here we will also make a morning
trip up to a nearby National Park to look for the reliable Buffy Helmetcrest
Hummingbird and if we are really lucky the Rainbow-bearded Thornbill.
Finally we'll head towards the city of Cali for 3 final
nights. Here we'll focus on several sites that have great bird feeders.
We'll be targetting incredible species of birds like the Multicolored
Tanager!!! After 3 nights in Cali we'll have a final nights dinner and then to catch our flights home
the next day (with hard drives full of images I am sure!).
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
On this photo adventure we will focus on the following opportunities:
Using flash effectively as a source of fill light: Because tropical regions are often cloudy - it is extremely important to learn how to use flash - either as fill or as a main source of light. Participants will also learn how to do set-ups for birds using more than one flash. These skills can easily be taken home and applied in your very own backyard!
Attracting birds to a perch setup: Participants will learn strategies to attract birds to a given perch and how to achieve images that have attractive light, an outstanding perch and a smooth background.
Strategies for successful tropical photography: Glenn has spent over a year and a half photographing wildlife in the tropics. Throughout the workshop he will share tips and tricks that he has learned along the way.
Macro photography of tropical insects and frogs: At each of our locations there will also be opportunities to find and photograph an amazing diversity of colourful frogs, butterflies and insects.
Nocturnal photography: During the nights around the lodges we will keep our ears open for night birds like owls and potoos. If we hear any we will try to track them down and learn techniques for successful night time bird photography.
Spectacular landscape photography: The cloud forest and rain forest are spectacular places and the opportunities for landscape photography are superb.
Digital Workshops: During the evenings for those who wish to participate, we will have image review sessions and talk about techniques and what we can expect to see the next day. In these post processing workshops participants will have ample opportunities to improve skills in Adobe Photoshop. Guided by Glenn, participants can learn how to take their images from straight out-of-the-camera RAW images to stunning final works of art (ready for printing or websites).
