AN INTRODUCTION TO THIS PHOTO WORKSHOP

Brazil is a very large and extremely diverse country. On this trip we plan to visit two of its most exciting ecosystems - the Atlantic Rainforest and the Pantanal. From fruit feeder set ups for stunning tanagers to Jaguar searching along the river banks and photography in the wide open wetlands this trip is sure to have something for everyone.

PHOTO ITINERARY

Our photo adventure starts in the vibrant city of Sao Paulo. Participants will be met at the international airport or meeting hotel and transferred directly to our first lodge of the trip. Nestled away in the heart of the Atlantic Rainforest we will spend 3 nights here working away at the dazzling array of different tanagers, hummingbirds, toucans and other types of birds that inhabit the area. We will focus on doing some great feeder setups for some brightly coloured tanagers and also hummingbird photography.

After 3 days in the Rainforest we will zip back to Sao Paulo to board a domestic flight into the Pantanal. From here we will have a solid 6 days of photography along the transpantaneira road. During this time we will stay at four different lodges and spend our days searching for a wide variety of different critters.

The Pantanal is one of the largest freshwater ecosystems on the planet. In the dry season (when we will visit) it has to be one of the great wildlife spectacles in the world. While the diversity of birds may not be what it is in the rainforest that fact is more than made up for by the relative ease at which wildlife can be spotted, observed and photographed. It is a true photographers paradise!

Some of the highlight species that we will search for in the Pantanal include the gorgeous Hyacinth Macaw, Jabiru, Sunbittern, plus Kingfishers, Herons and many different types of water birds.

Birds will remain our focus. But when in the Pantanal we will also be on the lookout for Giant Anteaters, Giant River Otters and we will have excellent opportunities for the magnificent Jaguars that can be found in the area at this time of year.

Once our time in the Pantanal has come to an end we'll head back to Sao Paulo for another two and a half days of Atlantic Rainforest action! This time we'll head to the other side of the city and target some really fantastic birds like the Festive Coquette, Chestnut-bellied Euphonia and Saw-billed Hummingbird. We'll set up at some really nice fruit feeders and try to add to our tally of INCREDIBLE Tanager species.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES

On this photo adventure we will focus on the following opportunities:

Using flash effectively as a source of fill light: Because tropical regions are often cloudy - it is extremely important to learn how to use flash - either as fill or as a main source of light. Participants will also learn how to do set-ups for birds using more than one flash. These skills can easily be taken home and applied in your very own backyard!

Dynamic action Photography: Especially in the Pnatanal we have some really fantastic opportunities for flight and action photography!

Attracting birds to a perch setup: Participants will learn strategies to attract birds to a given perch and how to achieve images that have attractive light, an outstanding perch and a smooth background.

Strategies for successful tropical photography: Glenn has spent over a year and a half photographing wildlife in the tropics. Throughout the workshop he will share tips and tricks that he has learned along the way.

Macro photography of tropical insects and frogs: At each of our locations there will also be opportunities to find and photograph an amazing diversity of colourful frogs, butterflies and insects.

Nocturnal photography: During the nights around the lodges we will keep our ears open for night birds like owls and potoos. If we hear any we will try to track them down and learn techniques for successful night time bird photography.

Digital Workshops:  During the evenings for those who wish to participate, we will have image review sessions and talk about techniques and what we can expect to see the next day.  In these post processing workshops participants will have ample opportunities to improve skills in Adobe Photoshop.  Guided by Glenn, participants can learn how to take their images from straight out-of-the-camera RAW images to stunning final works of art (ready for printing or websites).
